WHAT IS NEURODIVERGENT?

Neurodivergent is a term that describes someone who has neurodiversity in cognitive processes where the brain learns, thinks and processes information differently from other people. These differences may include medical disorders, such as learning disabilities, difficulty controlling behavior, difficulty concentrating and other conditions. The advantages of this condition include better memory, being able to imagine three-dimensional (3D) objects mentally easily, being able to solve complex mathematical calculations in the head just by reasoning, and many more.

CAUSES OF NEURODIVERGENT CHILDREN

Before Birth (Prenatal)

The period when a child is in the womb and has been diagnosed or known to have an abnormality. This is influenced by several factors:

  • Genetic Factors
  • Chromosomal Abnormalities
  • Pregnancy Infections
  • Poisoning during pregnancy
  • Stress when Pregnant

CAUSES OF NEURODIVERGENT CHILDREN

At Birth (Neonatal)

The period when abnormalities occur when a child is born is influenced by several things, including:

  • children born prematurely or born prematurely
  • A long birth process causes the baby to lack oxygen
  • Birth with an assistive device or vacuum can result in the babys head being pinched, disrupting the function and structure of the childs brain.

CAUSES OF NEURODIVERGENT CHILDREN

After Birth (Postnatal)

The period where abnormalities occur after the baby is born or when the child is in the developmental period. Even though the baby has undergone the birth process, it is not automatically safe, of course there are several things that can cause the child to experience abnormalities, including:

  • Infection, Caused by bacteria that can cause both physical and mental disorders.
  • Lack of food, If a child experiences malnutrition, the abnormalities that the child will experience apart from physical are mental and even behavioral.
  • Accident, This could be due to falls, strangulation, or accidentally swallowing drugs and chemicals.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder that includes increased motor activity in children, which causes the activities of children with ADHD to tend to be excessive and unusual. Children who experience ADHD show various complaints, including not being able to sit quietly, feeling restless, not being able to stay still, like to explode, and like to make noise (Adiputra et al, 2015).

Autism

Autism is a development that affects behavior with a complex disorder that results in a lack of childrens communication skills, childrens social and emotional relationships with other people, which makes it difficult for children to have the skills and knowledge needed as members of society (Kurniawan, 2021).

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a disorder that occurs in the learning process, where someone who suffers from Dyslexia has difficulty writing, reading and spelling. A dyslexia sufferer usually has difficulty identifying the words that will be spoken and must be changed into letters or sentences and so on (Irdawarni et al, 2018).

Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia is a developmental coordination disorder diagnosed in children who have motor coordination disorders that can interfere with the childs academic performance or daily life activities (Yani & Sina, 2022). One of the symptoms of Dyspraxia sufferers is difficulty carrying out simple activities, such as tying shoelaces, falling, etc

Tourette Syndrome (TS)

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a behavioral-developmental and neurological-psychological disorder characterized by unconscious actions, is genetic in nature and can be inherited from children, progresses rapidly, and has persistent vocal-motor tic patterns for years (Anurogo, 2013). Tourette Syndrome is also characterized by repetitive speech and unplanned movements, which are usually called tics.

Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a difficulty in learning mathematics, where children usually experience difficulty in solving mathematical problems, understanding basic mathematical concepts, number operations and their applications (Pranata & Wardani, 2015).

Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is someone who has the inability to write spelling properly and correctly, it can even be wrong because there are letters that are upside down, slow and difficult to take notes or write, sometimes children who have Dyscalculia do not finish the words or sentences in the writing (Rahmawati , 2013).

EARLY DETECTION OF TEACHERS AND PARENTS

Teachers and parents are independently able to carry out early detection of whether children are neurodivergent or not by:

  • Find out various appropriate information from various sources
  • Identifying childrens problems
  • Formulate steps for handling children
  • Develop the right strategy to maximize childrens talents

ALL CHILDREN HAVE ADVANTAGES

  • Each child is blessed with their own strengths
  • Parents must be able to deal with the diversity of their children.
  • Parents of neurodivergent children must learn to appreciate their childrens differences in terms of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Parents and teachers must believe in the abilities and strengths possessed by children.
  • Childrens abilities and talents need to be developed in good and conducive parenting patterns and a home environment that can help children improve their abilities (Eva, 2015).
